NOTICE ABOUT SILVER SPUR / BEST OF TEXAS AWARDS

As a result of the dissolution of the TPRA, the Public Relations Foundation of Texas will consider whether to take over the Silver Spur/Best of Texas and other awards competition. There will be no Silver Spur/Best of Texas competition in 2012, however. If the PRFT board votes to take over the competition, it would resume in 2013.

 An Announcement From The TPRA

As the year comes to a close, the Texas Public Relations Association is also – very regretfully – coming to a close.  After much deliberation, the Board of Directors voted to bring TPRA to dissolution, effective December 31.

While this action is being taken with no small amount of regret, it’s an action that has loomed as an inevitability over a number of years.  Declining membership and volunteerism, along with a fragile financial position, makes this a decision that could not be put off any longer.  The good news, however, is that the TPRA’s subsidiary – the perhaps less well-known Public Relations Foundation of Texas (PRFT) – will continue as an entity that provides scholarships and funding toward educational programs.  PRFT may also assume management of the annual Silver Spur / Best of Texas  awards program, along with certain professional development programming, although no final decisions have been made in this area.

For more than 50 years, TPRA has facilitated professional development programs and other networking opportunities for communicators  statewide.  Even more importantly, the association has served as a springboard for life-long relationships – both professional and personal – that have contributed to the development of some of this state’s top communications professionals during this time.  Our hope is that this type of networking will continue on an informal basis, based on newly formed relationships that have occurred in the recent past.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for your support of TPRA.

Larry Meltzer
President, TPRA
